Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth to develop and typically begin to show between the ages of 17 and 25. For many people, there is not enough room in the jaw for wisdom teeth to fully emerge, which can lead to a variety of problems that require their removal.
One of the most common issues is a mesial impaction, where the wisdom tooth grows at an angle toward the front of the mouth, pushing against the second molar. This can cause pain, swelling, and damage to the adjacent tooth. Other types of impactions include horizontal impactions, where the tooth grows sideways, and vertical impactions, where the tooth is trapped within the jawbone.
