Valentine’s Day and your teeth, from Rayhan and Marvizi DDS

Valentine’s Day is here and there is a lot of candy making the rounds this week. It’s once again time to remind all our patients to be extra careful when choosing those candies and treats!

All those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats are known to damage teeth, as well as braces if you’re wearing them! Did you know sour candies can be acidic to your teeth, and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? This can cause tooth decay and cavities! Sour and fruity candy, such as Starburst and Skittles, are the worst for your teeth since these candies have a low pH value, which is known to ruin enamel.

We recommend softer treats, such as soft chocolate or peanut butter cups, or melt-in-your-mouth foods. Those who indulge should make sure they brush and floss between teeth, as well as at the gum line.

Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at Rayhan and Marvizi DDS!

American Heart Month & your cardiovascular health, from Drs. Marvizi and Rayhan

You may remember our post from last week, when we discussed February being National Dental Health Month. But did you know February also marks American Heart Month at Marvizi Cosmetic Dentistry?

It’s a great time of the year to take notice of the health of your heart – cardiovascular disease remains American’s number one killer, claiming more lives than the rest of major causes of death, according to the American Heart Association. Studies have shown a correlation between gum disease and heart disease, underscoring the importance of good oral health care.

Visiting our Los Angeles, Long Beach or Bakersfield office regularly can help prevent gum disease or at least catch it in its early stages – a healthy mouth begins with a visit to Rayhan & Marvizi DDS. In observance of Heart Month, it’s also important to know your numbers: blood pressure (less than 120/80), cholesterol (less than 200) and BMI (less than 25). If you have any questions about heart health, or about your ongoing treatment at our office, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.

Or, you may ask us on Facebook!

Ask Drs. Rosita M. Rayhan, Joseph M. Marvizi, Jason Lahmani: If I have braces, do I still need a dental checkup every 6 months?

Thanks for the question! Yes! In fact, it’s even more important that patients receiving orthodontic treatment visit our office regularly. When you’re wearing braces, food may be caught in places that your toothbrush normally can’t reach. This causes bacteria to build up and can lead to cavities, gingivitis and even gum disease. Believe it or not, an estimated 80 percent of American adults currently have some form of gum disease. Studies have shown a correlation between gum disease and heart disease, underscoring the importance of good oral health care. Our staff at Rayhan and Marvizi DDS will work closely with your orthodontist to make sure that your teeth stay clean and healthy while you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment.

If it has been more than six months since your last visit to our Bakersfield, Long Beach, or Los Angeles office, please give us a call!

Are you wearing your mouthguard?

With fall sports close to wrapping up and winter sports right around the corner, many patients here at Rayhan and Marvizi DDS will once again pick up the ball, bring the cleats out of seasonal retirement and hit the fields for the return of sports action! During this time, however, Drs. Rosita M. Rayhan, Joseph M. Marvizi and Jason Lahmani and our team urge our young athletes to play it safe when out on the field. Here are a few ways to ensure your mouth’s safety this fall and winter,

1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as basketball, wrestling and hockey.
2. Wear a helmet
3. Wear protective eyewear
4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
5. Be alert, even as a spectator

We hope that helps. Drs. Rosita M. Rayhan, Joseph M. Marvizi and Jason Lahmani and team will tell you protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities. If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact our office or ask us on Facebook.

Stay safe!

REMINDER: Don’t throw those insurance benefits away!

Happy Thursday! Our team at Rayhan and Marvizi DDS would like to give those patients with flex spend, health savings, or insurance benefits a friendly end of the year reminder that it’s high time to schedule your dental visit so you may optimize your benefits.

Please call our office at your convenience to make an appointment. If you have used all your insurance benefits or do not have dental insurance at this time, we will create a plan to help you achieve your dental needs. We want you to have the best dental care and the healthiest teeth while getting the most out of your insurance benefits.

See you soon!

Halloween TIPS from the American Dental Association

It’s almost that spooky time of year again! Whether you are going door-to-door trick or treating, attending a party dressed in a clever, silly or scary costume, or simply getting together with friends and family to watch scary movies, our team at Rayhan and Marvizi DDS want you to keep in mind the following tips from our friends at the American Dental Association to help reduce tooth-decay.

•Eat treats with meals. Saliva production increases during meals washing out food particles and helping to neutralize cavity causing plaque acid.

•Consider chewing ADA-accepted sugarless gum after meals. Certain sugarless gums have earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance for scientifically proving that chewing the gum for 20 minutes after meals helped prevent tooth decay.

•Follow the 1-2-3s of good daily oral hygiene: Floss once a day, brush twice a day and eat three balanced meals a day.

•Visit Drs. Rosita M. Rayhan, Joseph M. Marvizi and Jason Lahmani for regular checkups.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN from your friends at Rayhan and Marvizi DDS!
