The Risk Factors and Common Symptoms of Gum Disease

LOS ANGELES AND LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA – Teeth are often the first feature we notice when meeting new people. A missing tooth or red, swollen gums could set a gloomy first impression.

That’s why it’s important to understand that although gum disease sometimes shows no symptoms, it could result in tooth loss, bone deterioration and decay.

The crevice between your teeth and gums is called a sulcus, says the Long Beach dental specialist. Gum diseases strike in the sulcus, and they can deteriorate the tissues that hold your tooth in place. You may be in danger of losing teeth if periodontal disease has advanced far enough. The word “periodontal” means “around the tooth.”

Gum disease comes in varying stages of severity. Gingivitis is mild and reversible, but it progresses to its more harmful ally – periodontitis- if not treated. With periodontitis, your gums are pulled away from your teeth and pockets form. Plaque attacks these pockets and moves below the gum line. Bone and ligaments are then damaged, resulting in loose teeth that may need extraction.

Know the Risk Factors
Jumping in bed without brushing your teeth could have major consequences. Poor oral hygiene is one of the biggest risks associated with periodontal disease. Bacteria and food particles collect in the mouth to form plaque and if plaque isn’t removed, your mouth is at risk for infection.

Certain medications can facilitate the onset of gum disease, such as some cancer drugs, steroids, oral contraceptives, anti-epilepsy drugs and calcium channel blockers. Any medicine that decreases your saliva can make your mouth more susceptible to bacteria. Enzymes in our saliva help break down food particles caught between our teeth and guard our mouths against plaque buildup.

The American Dental Association also reports that pregnancy can increase your chances of developing periodontal disease because of hormone changes. Ill-fitting bridges, damaged fillings and misaligned teeth can also trigger gum disease.

Gum disease normally appears when patients reach their 30s and 40s, and it affects men more often than women, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.

The American Academy of Periodontology has a risk assessment test you can take if you’re concerned about gum disease. The best way to ensure you’re not at risk for gum disease is to visit your dentist regularly.

Know the Symptoms
You probably know that daily flossing and twice daily brushing are imperative for good oral health. Pay close attention to changes in your teeth, gums and mouth that may signal gum disease.

Gum disease causes visible changes in the gums in more advanced stages. Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing could mean your gums are infected. Also be aware of how your gums look and feel. Red, inflamed, sensitive gums are symptoms of periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease causes gums to withdraw from the teeth, and sometimes pus pockets form in the newly empty spaces, as the Los Angeles implant dentist believes. Teeth that appear longer could be the result of gum recession, possibly from gum disease. Any change in the color, appearance or sensitivity of your gums could be symptoms of gum disease.

Patients experiencing any of these symptoms should see their family dentist for an exam. You can expect your dentist or dental hygienist to carefully inspect your teeth and gums, to measure your gums for pockets, and to inquire about your medical history. You may also receive X-rays at your visit. If you are diagnosed with gum disease, your dentist will discuss your treatment options based on the severity of your case. Sometimes patients with gum disease show no warning signs, which is why regular dental visits are vital.

Learning Risk Factors and Symptoms of Oral Cancer May Save Your Life

LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA – During the month of April, dentists across the country educate patients on the early signs of oral cancer, a dentist in Long Beach CA says. Oral cancer includes cancer of the mouth as well as cancer of the throat, or oropharynx. The National Cancer Institute estimates that in 2012, oral cancer will claim more than 40,000 new victims and will cause close to 8,000 deaths.

In Long Beach, cosmetic dentistry helps you feel confident and beautiful through teeth whitening, dental implants and veneers, but routine general dentistry could save your life.

According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, a study from the University of California, San Francisco, discovered that at least 8 out of 10 oral cancer patients were previously tobacco smokers. Other risk factors include heavy alcohol use, too much sun exposure, diets low in fruits and vegetables, HPV infections, and maté and betel nut use, according to the National Cancer Institute. Betel nuts are used widely in Asia, where oropharyngeal cancer is the most common cancer among males.

A Recent Study Shows that Dental Issues Flood Emergency Rooms

LOS ANGELES, LONG BEACH, AND BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA – The Pew Center reports that the number of emergency room cases involving dental problems is rising (Link).

Florida emergency room doctors saw 115,000 patients with non-injury dental complaints in 2011. In California, 83,000 patients visited emergency rooms with dental ailments that could have been avoided with preventive care.

This problem isn’t just affecting oral care in adults, as the Long Beach dentist, Dr. Marvizi, believes. In 2008 in the state of New York, the number of children with tooth decay visited emergency rooms or ambulatory surgery centers 32 percent more than in 2004, according to Pew Center research. The Scoop on Dental X-rays

Dental X-rays are an essential and invaluable tool to help assist us in evaluating your oral health. With X-rays, we can see what’s happening beneath the surface of your teeth and gums and identify oral health issues otherwise hidden during a visual exam, including:

· small areas of decay between the teeth or below existing restorations (fillings)
· infections in the bone
· periodontal (gum) disease
· abscesses or cysts
· developmental abnormalities
· types of tumors

If left untreated, these problems can lead to expensive, time-consuming, and painful conditions, so it’s important to find and treat them early.

Dental X-rays are extremely safe, and our team is certified in the proper use of our digital X-ray equipment. The amount of radiation that you are exposed to from dental X-rays is very small compared to your daily exposure from things like atmospheric radiation and naturally-occurring radioactive elements, as well as medical X-rays you may have gotten at your doctor’s office or hospital. In fact our digital system dramatically decreases the already minimal amount of exposure even further. We try to be as conservative as possible when prescribing x-rays but do need them to see what is going on where our eyes can’t see.

Bad Breath is No Good

Bad breath, also called halitosis, can result from poor dental health habits and may be a sign of other health problems. Bad breath can also be made worse by the types of foods you eat and other unhealthy lifestyle habits. You may not even be aware of your own bad breath, so if you’re concerned you may be suffering from it, talk to Rayhan & Marvizi DDS. We can help identify the cause and, if it’s due to an oral condition, develop a treatment plan to treat it.

There are many reasons for bad breath:

· What you eat can also affect the way your breath smells. Certain foods, such as garlic and onions, can have a very strong and lasting odor.
· If you don’t brush and floss daily, particles of food remain in the mouth, collecting bacteria, which can cause bad breath, not to mention tooth decay and gingivitis.
· Bad breath can be caused by dry mouth (xerostomia), which occurs when the flow of saliva decreases. Saliva is necessary to cleanse the mouth and remove particles that may cause odor.
· Tobacco products cause bad breath. If you use tobacco, ask us for tips on kicking the habit.
· Bad breath may be the sign of a medical disorder, such as a local infection in the respiratory tract, chronic sinusitis, postnasal drip, chronic bronchitis, diabetes, gastrointestinal disturbance, liver or kidney ailment. If this is the case, you may be referred to your family doctor or a specialist to determine the cause.

The good news is there are many ways to help eliminate bad breath from your life. Maintaining good oral health is essential to reducing bad breath, so schedule regular dental visits with Rayhan and Marvizi DDS for a professional cleaning and checkup. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to remove food debris and plaque, and don’t forget to brush your tongue, too!

President’s Day Fun Facts!

Yesterday was Presidents’ Day, a day known for celebrating of both George Washington’s and Abraham Lincoln’s combined Birthdays. Presidents’ Day was created in 1971, when President Richard Nixon combined the birthdays of two of our most well-known presidents into one single federal holiday. Presidents’ Day also marks a hard-earned day off from work and school for a lot of our patients at Rayhan and Marvizi DDS.

Here are a few fun facts about our nation’s presidents:

*Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, carried letters, bills and notes in his tall stovepipe hat.

*George Washington is the first president to be featured on a postage stamp.

*Ronald Reagan, our 40th president, broke the so-called “20-year curse,” in which every president elected in a year ending in zero died in office.

*Abraham Lincoln was the tallest of the U.S. presidents, measuring 6’ 4” tall.

*Virginia is the birthplace of more United States presidents than any other state, followed by Ohio and Massachusetts.

*Harry S. Truman was the first president to have his Inauguration and speeches televised.
